Abstract: Cadmium represents one of the important toxic metals. The effect of its acute poisoning is manifested in a variety of symptoms, including high blood pressure, kidney damage, and destruction of red blood cells. Although cadmium has only limited use as a pure metal, it forms many binary and more complex alloys, which have useful properties for many commercial applications. It improves the hardness and wear resistance, mechanical strength, fatigue strength, castability and electrochemical properties and lowers the alloy melting point of many alloys (e.g., copper–cadmium and tin– lead–bismuth–cadmium alloys) [1]. A molecularly imprinted polymer (MIP) was prepared using complex of cadmium ion with a recently synthesized schiff’s base as template, methacrylicacid (MA) as functional monomer, ethyleneglycoldimethacrylate (EGDMA) as cross-linking monomer and 2, 2'- azobisisobutyronitrile (AIBN) as initiator. The synthesized polymers were characterized by IR spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction and thermal analysis techniques. The MIP was used as a selective sorbent in molecularly imprinted solid-phase extraction (MIPSPE) for preconcentration and determination of Cd2+ ions from the environmental water. The variables affecting the extraction efficiency of MIP-SPE procedure were systematically investigated to facilitate the selective extraction of cadmium ions from spiked water samples. The spiked aqueous solution was adjusted to optimum pH before being percolated through the MIP-SPE cartridge. The developed MIP-SPE method was demonstrated to be applicable to the analysis of cadmium ions in the environmental waters [2, 3]
