Abstract: Objective: To prepare a monolithic molecularly imprinted polymer(mMIP) with specific recognition ability for the ephedrine molecule. Method: An ephedrine molecularly imprinted monolithic column was prepared by in situ polymerization using methacrylic acid (MAA) as a functional monomer, ethylene glycol dimethacrylate (EDMA) as a cross—linking agent, toluene and dodecanol as porogenic solvents, and 2,2'-azobisisobutyronitrile (AIBN) as an initiator. Results: The synthesis condition was optimized. The results showed the best ratio of template and functional monomer was 1:2 and the toluene content in porogen was 20—25%. Scanning electron microscopy and mercury intrusion porosimetry were used to identify the structural features of the mMIP. Results show the presence of three types of pore structure.The large through-pore structure allows mobile phase to flow through the column of mMIP at a low back pressure and the others may lead to the molecular recognition. Some chromatographic conditions such as the pH and the composition of the mobile phase were characterized. Conclusion: The ephedrine molecularly imprinted monolithic polymer has specific recognition ability for the ephedrine molecule. The ephedrine and pseudoephedrine were to be separated under optimized conditions.
