Abstract: Crosslinked hydrogel polymers are disclosed which bind specifically one or more sugars. Also disclosed are methods of preparing a hydrogel polymer which specifically binds one or more sugars. Also disclosed are methods for binding and/or removing one or more sugars from the gastrointestinal tract of a patient, comprising orally administering to the patient in need thereof a crosslinked hydrogel polymer which specifically binds the one or more sugars. Also disclosed is a method of diagnosing, monitoring or treating type II diabetes or a complication thereof, comprising orally administering to a patient in need thereof a crosslinked hydrogel polymer which specifically binds one or more sugars. Also disclosed is a method of treating obesity or a complication thereof, comprising orally administering to a patient in need thereof a crosslinked hydrogel polymer which specifically binds one or more sugars.
