Abstract: Due to the advantages of ease of preparation, low cost, and good stability, monolithic materials have been widely used for various applications in liquid chromatography. Monolithic materials can be divided into two types according to chemical composition: organic polymer-based and inorganic silica-based. Extracting bioactive compounds from natural plants is an important way of developing new drugs; monolithic materials can aid the purification of bioactive compounds from extract solutions. This review presents an overview of the properties of monolithic materials, and gives a brief overview of the application of monolithic materials for purification and analysis of bioactive compounds from natural plants in high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC), with a special focus on their use as surface bonded stationary phase and solid-phase extraction (SPE) sorbents.
