Abstract: The template approach is applied to the synthesis of ion-templated polymers using a variety of template metals. The resulting polymers are used as selective sequestering resins, and are extensively tested and characterized. Several of these polymers are also used to construct ion selective electrodes for sensing the template metal ion. A parallel path of research entails synthesis of the polymers with ligating monomers that possess chromo- and fluorophores, allowing for the construction of chemically selective optical metal ion sensors. These and further studies are aimed at the elucidation and optimization of a general approach for the synthesis of selective metal ion sequestering and sensing polymers
