Abstract: A novel highly selective magnetic sorbent was synthesized for rapid preconcentration of Cd(II) ions. A cadmium-imprinted polymer was grafted on Fe3O4 nanoparticles to give the magnetic property to the sorbent. The grafting was characterized by IR spectroscopy, X-ray powder diffraction, scanning electron microscopy and differential thermal analysis. The effects of sample pH, eluent factors (type, concentration and volume) and the time of adsorption and desorption were investigated. The retained cadmium was determined by flame atomic absorption spectroscopy. The limit of detection and relative standard deviation values were 0.09 μg L-1 and 1.7%, respectively, under optimum conditions. The accuracy of the method was confirmed using standard materials. Finally, this method was applied for the determination of Cd(II) in used and non-used diesel oils
