Abstract: Novel monocationic complexes of the type (dppe)Pt(salicylimine)BF 1a have been recently prepared and characterized. We have observed imine metathesis with added anilines in aprotic media, presumably the result of intramolecular electrophilic activation by the cationic metal center. Equilibrium constants have been tabulated with various 4-substituted anilines to establish a free energy relationship with ligand electronics. We have previously prepared in our lab Pt molecularly imprinted polymers (MIPs) in which each metal center has an associated chiral cavity. Unfortunately, there exists a broad distribution of cavity shapes, which makes spectroscopic characterization difficult. The discussed dynamic imine exchange experiments were designed specifically to probe the structure of MIPs. Any perturbation of equilibrium 1a/1b from that observed in solution will be caused by the surrounding structure of the Pt-associated cavity.
