Abstract: We have previously proposed a concept for a biomimetic sensor array for use in astrobiology planetary-lander missions to search for molecular biomarkers related to extinct or extant life. The concept utilises molecular imprinted polymers (MIPs) as the molecular recognition components. As part of the realisation of the preceding concept, we have investigated the intimate incorporation of MIP thin- films onto transducer relevant surfaces. The use of surface immobilised photo-initiators for the in situ photo-polymerisation of the MIP thin- films resulted in photo-grafted and homogeneous layers with controlled thickness in the range of single to ten's of nanometres suitable for sensing applications. Further physical characterisation of the films after exposure to simulated extreme environments likely in astrobiology-relevant conditions demonstrated the stability of the MIP thin-films. Thus, an underpinning part of the proposed robust biomimetic sensor array is being demonstrated
