Abstract: Oleophobic mixed monolayers of n-octadecyltrichlorosilane (OTS) and surfactant dyes are adsorbed on polar solid surfaces. The dye molecules are then removed by solvent treatment leaving holes entrapped within a stable network of chemisorbed and polymerized silane molecules. Surfaces coated with such skeletonized OTS monolayers are shown to exhibit adsorption properties related to specific geometrical features of the displaced molecules. This provides a new artificial means for directing molecular organization taking place at a solid-liquid interface. Practical applications to the study of liquid crystals, chemical reactions of oriented molecules and chromatography are suggested.
