Abstract: An efficient separation process for rare earth metals is needed to provide novel advanced materials for various electronic, optical, and magnetic devices. Solvent extraction is well known to be an effective method for separation of the metals on an industrial scale. However, this process requires a large number of stages in a series of mixer-settlers to obtain high-purity products because these elements behave almost identically. We have developed surface-templated polymers for the separation of rare earth metals. The imprinted polymers were prepared by surface template polymerization with dioleylphosphoric acid as a functional monomer The separation of rare earth metal ions with the polymers was conducted, and the template effect was characterized by comparison with that in ordinary solvent extraction for the metal ions
