Abstract: The uniformly sized molecularly imprinted polymer(MIP) for racemic metoprolol has been prepared by a two-step swelling and thermal polymerization method using linear polystyrene emulsion as seeds, methacrylic acid(MAA) as a host functional monomer and ethylene glycol dimethacrylate(EDMA) as cross-linker,respectively. Under optimized reaction conditions, the uniformly sized MIPs with better monodispersity were obtained. The influences of the dispersive, emulsifying and cavity-inducing agents as well as the stirring speed on the polymer size and distribution, apparent morphology and absorption property were discussed. The prepared MIP showed an excellent recognition not only for metoprolol(the template molecule) but also for its structural related compound, atenolol.
