Abstract: Molecularly imprinted polymers (MIPs) represent a new class of materials possessing high selectivity and affinity for the target molecule. In this work we have prepared MIP particles for selective extraction and determination of nickel(II) ion in aqueous media. Polymerization was achieved in glass tube containing NiCl2, morin, 2-vinylpyridine (VP), ethyleneglycoldimethacrylate (EDMA), 2,2'- azobisisobutyronitrile (AIBN). The polymer block obtained was ground and sieved (55-75 mu m) and complex was removed from polymer particles by leaching with 2M HCl which leaves a cavity in the polymer particles. The effect of different parameters, such as pH, extraction time, type and least amount of eluent for elution of complex from polymer, breakthrough volume and limit of detection were evaluated. Also the effect of various cationic interferences on percent recovery of complex was studied. Extraction efficiencies >99% were obtained by elution of the polymers with methanol-CH3COOH (10:5). The limit of detection of the proposed method is 3.3 ppb. The method was applied to the recovery and determination of Ni in biological and water samples
