Abstract: Dr Edward Lai is Professor of Chemistry at Carleton University in Ottawa, Canada. His research interests focus on instrumental analysis of biochemical substances, drug formulations, environmental allergens and high-technology materials. Laser spectroscopy, ablation time-of-flight mass spectrometry, surface plasmon resonance biosensors, immunoassays, capillary electrophoresis and electrochromatography are the major techniques facilitating his research programme. Dr Lai's current projects include laser desorption ionisation of peptides, proteins and macromolecules for time-of-flight mass spectrometric analysis, detection of mycotoxins and allergenic proteins in food by surface plasmon resonance immunoassay, and combinatorial study of binding interactions with molecularly imprinted polymers in capillary columns for rapid screening of drugs
