Abstract: Surface-initiated atom transfer radical polymerization (SI-ATRP) is one of the "grafting form" techniques, which has been widely used in modification of material surface. Using this method, the well-defined polymer brushes can be grafted onto various surfaces. Graft polymer on the membrane surface via SI-ATRP, we can effectively change the composition of the polymer brushes and the degree of polymerization, and then change the nature of the membrane surface. This article summarized the characteristics of SI-ATRP and application of SI-ATRP in surface graft modification for different membranes, such as pervaporation membrane, molecularly imprinted membrane, gas separation membrane. Finally, it described its research prospect
