Abstract: Molecularly imprinted polymers (MIPs) have pre-determined selectivity for specific substrate. These polymers have binding characteristics that are analogous to the biological antibodies. From the time when introduced, MIPs gained much importance from research point of view. However, its applicability on large scale needs further improvement because of their potential for wide-ranging applications in biomedical, biosensors, catalysis, food manufacturing, processing, analysis and quality control. The further developments in this field need to be explored and to study their overall aspects. The development of true understanding of various aspects will help in design and application of new and improved molecularly imprinted polymer system. In the present review an attempt is made to focus the various aspects of MIPs for better understanding and to provide a road map for the future development in this field. The article is divided into different sections to overview the various aspects of MIPs, from basics to applications.
